Recent advances in earth station architecture are increasing SATCOM performance while keeping costs low. Sophisticated low-cost, high performance L-Band up and down converters are contributing to this positive performance trend.

The VertexRSI LT-3000 Up and Down Converter represents the latest in this new class of converters.

L-Band converters use frequency synthesizers designed and produced in high volume for cellular and PCS applications, which makes them more cost-effective to buy. When used in newer earth station configurations, L-Band converters supply frequency agility and excellent phase noise and spurious performance at a much lower cost compared to older configurations.

The VertexRSI LT-3000 UP/Down Converter is a convenient, low-cost solution for systems requiring a 70 MHz (or optional 140 MHz) to L-Band interface. Housed in a low-profile single rack unit (1.75in) chassis, the LT-3000 synthesized up and down converters use a dual-stage conversion design, providing high-performance over a full 575 MHz bandwidth.

James Hurlburt, Product Line Manager, said, "VertexRSI LT-3000 L-Band converters increase earth station performance and are very easy to install, program and monitor. Each converter features an on-board micro controller that can be accessed by a front panel keypad or an RS-232 or RS-422/485 interface located on the rear panel. This interface allows users to program the synthesizers, calibrate control of transmit gain or receive gain, and make frequency offset adjustments. Detected transmit and receive signal levels along with alarm conditions may also be monitored through the serial interface."

Both up and down converters can feed DC power and a 10 MHz reference out of the transmit or receive ports to supply either a phase-locked Block Up Converter (BUC) or Low Noise Block Converter (LNB).

"When combined with a VertexRSI C, X or Ku-Band solid-state power amplifier, BUC and LNB, the LT-3000 converter provides a high-performance, cost-effective transceiver solution for a variety of communications systems," Hurlburt said.
